Kitchen Hero — The tree out front is turning red instead of yellow, but only on the side where the hummingbird feeder hangs. Is it sentient? Is it an octopus? Meanwhile, I made muffins.

The trees are changing colour already. What's weird is that this tree, which normally goes yellow in the fall, has decided on red this year. What's extra weird is that it's only happening where the hummingbird feeder is, which is also red.

I'm confused. Is our tree an octopus, adapting to its environment? Is the tree sentient?

Speaking of vegetation, I made zucchini muffins today with walnuts and chocolate chips. It was immensely satisfying. Jenn normally does the muffin baking, but today I decided I needed less screen time and more IRL time, so I wore the mantle of Muffin Man™.

Do you know the Muffin Man? You do now. I'm pleased to report that I did pretty darn good for one of my first muffinings.

I had help.

First of all, we had a zucchini from Jenn's sister Heather. It was roughly the size of my arm and we've been eating it for a week. We had enough left over to warrant making muffins. It was huge.

Second of all, Jenn had a recipe from LOVE AND LEMONS that made it easy to follow along and show up like a kitchen hero.

What I learned is that I overmixed the ingredients a little, as evidenced by the smooth, glossy tops. And that I overfilled the muffin holder things — I probably should have gone halfway up. But hey, I didn't know what I didn't know.

What I do know is that they came out perfectly. Moist and delicious.

I've also decided I need to write in the morning, not wait until an entire day has passed before I jump in and jot words.

Thanks for reading. I promise grander stories in the weeks to come.
