Step One in the Apocalypse

Apocalypse Training

If I learned anything from the eighties its to have a mohawk in the apocalypse. And chaps. And a motorcycle. I'm literally built for this timeline. Panda and I came back from a vacation to Maui on March 11, 2020. On March 12 the world tilted and we were told to go into quarantine for 14 days. We didn't "have to" because we were under the cut-off but it was strongly suggested that we isolate hard because Panda works in healthcare. Quarantine wasn't horrible. But by DAY 4 I was bored and decided that to really get into the spirit of the apocalypse I would shave my hair into a mohawk. It's been a long time since I've rocked a 'hawk, and this one was much thinner than my last one due in part to what I call my "naturally occurring mohawk" of male-pattern baldness. Panda did the honours while I streamed it live on Facebook, then we took to our friends and asked for colours. This is a tale of friendship. Good friends, and motorcycle family Trevor and Lanchi Dech, dropped off purple hair dye for me to really lean into the moment. They dropped it off on our front step and we got right to work.

DAY 5 we get a call from our friend Lisa at Bloom Photographie. She's doing "Porch Portraits" to capture some fun and help people feel connected during this weird time and wondered if she could come by and do a shoot for us. Hell yes. Panda and I got into our best Apocalypse-Wear on, sharpened our tools, cued the smoke machine and defended our home from the marauding hordes on our quiet street in Kensington -- from a safe distance of course. DAY 9? I've lost track of the days but somewhere in here I started work on www.CrookLook.com which is a free service for people who make masks to connect with people who want masks. WHAT DAY IS IT??!?! At some point we ran out of food so I gave our friend Jebb Fink a call at Jebb's Joint and asked if he could help us out. Without batting an eye Jebb dropped off a box of his amazing home-cooked Italian food for us to dine in the apocalypse in style. He even went shopping at the market for us to pick up some staples so we were looked after. The stories of those first few weeks of the apocalypse are filled with love and friendship and comradery. We were all in this together. Guess what? We're all still in this together. It's tiring to be sure, but let's remember that we've still got each other to get through the shitty parts.
